For those who don't live in Johannesburg and don't know: We tend to schedule some of the Festivities a bit sooner than is done elsewhere simply because most of Johannesburg shuts down from about the 10th of December every year and many leave the City for other places in South Africa or overseas where they can relax with family and friends and just take a rest from the frenetic pace of life in the "City of Gold".

The Best Place to be in Midrand...


One of the difficulties of starting your own business sometimes can be the loneliness, especially if you’re a gregarious person. It helps to “get out” somehow and one of the excuses I used was to take advantage of Cappuccino’sMidrand’s Unlimited Wireless Internet facilities (which is great if you need it – actually, I have my own) but it is good to know about, and a great excuse to get out and chat to people if you work alone most of the day.

Cappuccino’s Midrand is certainly one of the greatest landmarks in the area with its double-volume circular shape giving one a sense of uncluttered space yet somehow managing to maintain a wonderful ambience for social or business interactions. It is no wonder you will often notice business meetings in progress at various tables there, corporate lunches, celebrations, parties, and friendly coffee/chat sessions happening and the place buzzes, with a busy-ness that is both fun and good for working or friendly connections from early in the morning (Breakfast is served from 7am) through to late at night. The place is never empty. Mike and Nana, the co-owners are examples of the best kind of boss which reflects in the warm, friendly, service-with-a-smile of the staff. The food is excellent and competitively priced. There isn’t anything to beat it in Midrand. That’s why Beautiful Bracelets is proud to say this building has been “almost” our first office. And we will certainly celebrate our successes there as the business grows!

Celebrate!

I love this quote by Dr Mike Murdock and it really resonated with me this week. I am very happy to have Beautiful Bracelets stocked in various outlets, from Johannesburg to Cape Town and in 2013 one of my goals will be to increase the retail outlets where Beautiful Bracelets are sold in South Africa. Sometimes it may seem that one or another retail outlet's sales of Beautiful Bracelets are either minimal or zero. There could be several reasons why this is not happening, perhaps that particular store has a sales representative inhouse who is simply not interested in the product or for some reason is promoting other items in the store.
Then there are other outlets that are selling Beautiful Bracelets with such gusto that I have to replenish stock almost every other day. This kind of retailer is Celebrating Beautiful Bracelets! And that is where we want to be: Where we are Celebrated...!

Tips to Boost Business This Christmas

Run a Last Minute Competition. I’ve noticed a few companies still doing this, why not you? There is plenty of information on the internet on how to do it well, and inexpensively via social media and online via your website.

Christmas Markets. If you’re in a small startup like Beautiful Bracelets, ensure you’re at every possible Christmas Market you can gain entrance to. People do go to these Markets with the express purpose of buying Christmas Gifts, and at one such Christmas Market, a real estate agent was handing out free “branded” bottled water to everyone as they arrived at the market, so there are ways that any business can increase it’s “reach” this Season.

Delivery. Offer guaranteed delivery by a certain date. Christmas should be perfect, especially the presents. Customers will want their deliveries promptly before the big day arrives.
v    Make sure your customers know the last date and time they can order something and have it delivered before Christmas.
v      When they might expect to receive delivery of the item/s.
v      If they ordered after the final date for it to be in time for Christmas, where else might they be able to find the item.

Greetings to your Database. Email your database with a “Happy Holidays” or “Christmas” greeting to ensure they keep you top of mind. Include a few special offers on products. Don’t overdo it or it could backfire on you when your email is sent to “spam”.

Run limited period promotional offers: Free-gift wrapping, perhaps give them a mince pie and a cup of tea whilst they are waiting (it would be great if the tyre balancing service people would do this). Use any opportunity you can to get to know your customers, and offer excellent customer service.

Branded Gifts. Give your clients or customers a useful Branded Gift. (Like the Bottled Water mentioned before). The more personal the gift, the better. Many people use Fridge Magnets for branding these days. But if these are a conspicuous advertisement they could land up in the trash.

Christmas is very commercialised, but we can make it special and personal, and if carefully thought out, it is a time when people are thinking of community and involvement (exchanging gifts) and it can be a very uplifting and joyous time. Celebrate it with your customers in a way they will remember you.

Twitter Tips to Promote Your Startup Business


Before the Radio 702 Money Show Challenge on 1 October 2012, although I had a personal Twitter account, like so many others: I never used it. So I had to become an expert on Twitter (and many other things) in a hurry since starting Beautiful Bracelets! I have a few tips for those who, like me, are fairly new to Twitter. I could probably do some of these things a bit better myself, I’m still learning! I am including some things that put me off Twitter so I hope I am not offending anyone by mentioning it here. Feel free to leave a comment or a tip, I am quite happy to consider other points of view or ideas. I’m still growing, learning and changing to become better at this each day:
  • Don’t spam your Followers by sending out too much info in a rapid succession of Tweets. Rather use something like Hootsuite or Tweetdeck and schedule the information in say, 5 short Tweets over the period of a week or so.
  • It is better not to have your Facebook/Twitter accounts linked, I noticed very quickly that people don’t like it. It feels too much like Spam.
  • No graphic details. Don’t tell me what you ate for breakfast, lunch or supper unless you’re a restaurant. Maybe I’m squeamish.
  • Reach out to your Audience in a friendly way and tell them things that may be of interest to them. The kind of things that others “retweet” will give you an idea of what people like to hear about. Tailor this to yourself and your tweeting.
  • Be Retweetable! Add Tweet buttons to your website and Blog. Make it easier for others to retweet you. Keep your Tweets to under 120 characters or less if you want to allow commentary.
  • Tweet to Inspire or Inform: Some of my best viewed content was as a result of the following Tweets: “Anything is Possible”, “How to GetYour Products into Retail Stores”, “Have a Vision for Your Business”. In each case, I quoted the link to the related Blog Post on the “1000 Beautiful Bracelets” Blog.
  • Track your success. Google Analytics is a great tool for this. What is the point of using Social Media or Blogs if you don’t track everything and keep yourself up to date with what’s of interest to your audience? 
  • Be relationship-focused and keep the human-interest angle top of mind.

More Christmas Markets..!


Our first Christmas Market was a wonderful success. It really was a stunning vibe, I hope the photo gives a sense of the atmosphere, which was heightened with a sense of “intrigue” as husbands waited for wives to walk on to the next table before sneaking back to buy a Beautiful Bracelet as a gift for her! A few people commented that they had avidly followed the Radio 702 Money Show Challenge, it was lovely to meet and chat to them.

With such a lovely start to the Festive Season, we are really looking forward to this coming Friday evening, when we will be at the Midrand Urban Moonlight Market and Carols...

Preparing for Christmas Markets..

Although people have already been purchasing Beautiful Bracelets with a view to giving them as gifts for Christmas, today we have been preparing energetically for a Christmas Moonlight Market tomorrow (although it's being branded as a "Festive Moonlight Market". Really looking forward to this one. It's our first Moonlight Market. So there wasn't time for much else, but the highlight of my day was an email from a customer (following on yesterday's Blog post) who said:

Just to let you know I received my Beautiful Bracelet on Wednesday (delivered) and it makes me feel good, beautiful and capable. Thank you, and all the best...

This is exactly the kind of response we love!

Customers Who Love Beautiful Bracelets!

I surprise myself that even after having arranged delivery via courier of quite a number of Beautiful Bracelets to various customers from across South Africa and overseas, I STILL wait, holding my breath each time, to find out whether the person is happy with their order and with the product. To date, between 25% and 30% of all Beautiful Bracelets sales have been online sales. And since my desire is for this online business to really take off and do well, I am probably a bit intense over making sure I do it right.

I don't want to pressure anyone by calling or emailing too quickly. So usually I just wait. Of course, if I had no response within a reasonable period, I would follow up in case there is a problem (thank goodness, no problems to date). I do have a 100% guarantee/returns/refund policy but hope it is never needed. This past week has had the most orders generated so far and many of the deliveries reached their destinations. I am so happy to have received ecstatic, happy responses from customers so far:

Why Am I in Business?

Very few people ask themselves this question, especially people starting a business for the first time, and sadly they might only ask the question if they fail. The stats are high for failures of startups and I hope to give help that would give you a greater chance of not being one of the casualties if you are considering starting a business or have already.

Some of the reasons might include:
  • To set oneself up for retirement.
  • To have a certain lifestyle.
  • To fire your boss
  • To prove something to yourself, your parents, or life partners/family
  • To cash in on a great idea or opportunity
  • To create a legacy for your family when you move on
  • To be financially independent
  • To make a lot of money and live at the sea
My own reason for being in business is to make the maximum profit possible in whatever business it is, so that I can be a conduit of financial blessing to many people firstly by providing employment and secondly by providing practical help and donations to certain registered Charity Organisations, like the Starfish Foundation. My own view is that it is crucial for a business to be tithing, or donating a minimum of 10% of profits to a beneficiary from Day 1 of the business. Today I received the thank you letter from the Starfish Foundation for 100% of Profits of Beautiful Bracelets in the first 6 weeks:

Starfish brings life, hope and opportunity to children left orphaned or vulnerable in South Africa. On their info sheet, they state:

South Africa is experiencing the largest HIV and AIDS epidemic in the world, with a 10.6 % national HIV prevalence rate. Approximately 22% of the country‟s 18.6 million children are affected by HIV, with over 2 million children left orphaned, with the number of children with neither a mother nor father having more than doubled since 2002. 60.5% of children are living in poverty, where the monthly per capita income is less than R522, with 28.8% and 16.3% of children living far from any health facility or primary school, respectively.

Beautiful Bracelets will be continuing to donate a minimum of 10% probably to a similar non-profit linked to my church, being Acts of Love as well as continuing with donations to the Starfish Foundation since their cause is close to my heart.. At the moment this ministry is involved with a Shoebox Project, where 1000's of orphaned children in the Midrand area will be receiving a gift at the Annual Christmas Party arranged by the Acts of Love Charity. There are many different projects they are involved with throughout the year, bringing practical help to the hungry and hurting in the area.

Week 7 Reportback!

Today was a good day, I had more customers coming back to buy even more Beautiful Bracelets as Christmas Gifts, and much of this business was repeat business. Which is gratifying. And I received a phone call from a customer in Cape Town who was ecstatic, having received her Beautiful Bracelets order. So far the feedback from all customers who buy online has been great. The best customer is a happy customer who buys again!

I am toying with the idea of continuing with a weekly summary and feedback report as I did in the first 6 weeks. Perhaps continuing to Week 10. But Week 7 has been the busiest yet, I have been literally "run off my feet" with the Beautiful Bracelets Business. Just when I thought, great, the challenge is over, now I can rest a few days and put my feet up. Not so. The orders in the first 3 days after the Grande Finale exceeded the first 3 weeks of the Money Show Challenge, it has been quite something to keep up! Especially as all the profits are in the hands of Starfish, one would usually re-invest profits especially in a Startup situation. Since I want to keep this R1000 as close to the original idea as possible and just see how far it can go within 6 months, I will invest R4850 of my own money into the business to put it back to a "real life" scenario.

From now on, Beautiful Bracelets needs to secure its own Markets (flea markets) and it turns out, places like  Irene Market apparently have a waiting list of 2 years! Which is why it was wonderful to have the support of people like Corlia who has an existing Antique Jewellery Section and broke her own rules to "host" Beautiful Bracelets for the duration of the Money Show Challenge (It is quite a responsibility to take on other people's products due to high theft levels at these Flea Markets: a shocking thought). We have been accepted onto at least one Christmas Market (although it seems some of them prefer to be branded as "Festive" markets). And another to confirm shortly. Then I have so many other avenues to explore, it is time-consuming, but this is the groundwork needed, and it will be covered. My business coach said he wanted me to double employees and profits in the next 6 weeks. That would be great, especially since this is traditionally a good time of year to be selling "gift" items like Beautiful Bracelets! As I go forward, I will let you know where Beautiful Bracelets may be found and what I am doing to boost sales. One new store where you can find Beautiful Bracelets probably within a day or so, is at The Ballet Box in Tygervalley, Cape Town.

The other great thing is I managed to secure the domain www.beautifulpendants.co.za which will point to Beautiful Bracelets and we will be launching Beautiful Pendants shortly due to popular demand. At the Grande Finale of the Money Show Challenge, Tracey Webster, CEO of the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship actually said to me (live on air): you should branch out into a wider range of products like necklaces/pendants and earrings. Well, one of the new Beautiful Pendants had already been presented to the Starfish Foundation Charity Art Auction and I have had requests from clients who want to buy matching sets. So Beautiful Pendants will be available soon!

Anything is Possible

One of the best things that has come out of starting "Beautiful Bracelets" (as a result of the Radio 702/Cape Talk Money Show Challenge) is that I have had wonderful comments, compliments and even phone calls from complete strangers, some of whom would like to start a micro-business (or already have). Some of these started a micro business as a result of realising it can be done, many of them saying they were specifically encouraged to start as a result of the Money Show Challenge.

My favourite comment of all came today in an email from a customer in another City who purchased from Beautiful Bracelets online:

I just transferred money for the bracelet and look forward to receiving it.

You know what?
I hardly ever, well I could say never wear jewellery.

However wanted to have a bracelet because it will be a fabulous reminder that 'anything is possible'.

So Happy to Be Right in the Middle Of..

It's hard not to take note of the world's 2nd largest timed cycling race when it cuts through the middle of your City! South Africa also hosts the biggest cycling race, being the Cape Argus in March. Today my thoughts go to the 26,000 cyclists in the 94.7 Cycle Challenge and more especially to the many charities that benefit from the event. The race passes through Midrand, and some road closures already affected me, the night before the race I had to re-route on the way to dinner with a friend! I suppose the level of logistics and planning mean that some things have to be done many hours in advance of the 05h30 Sunday start in Midrand. The race actually cuts Midrand in half, and some routes are closed for most of the day. . Depending on where you live, it's possible to get stuck at home for the entire day! Others escape for a weekend break/getaway to avoid this.

I prefer running or hiking to cycling, although I have a great admiration for those involved in the race today. I believe that balance is important to success in business, which includes keeping a level of physical fitness for the sake of health. And for me that includes my weekly "rest" day.

Ambush Marketing

This is an excellent way to maximize marketing for a startup or a new business with a low budget, but only if you do it right or you may end up arrested or worse: serving jail time! The best example I know of personally went down so well it is now a case study in business and law facilities of some universities! Here is the story in their own words:

So this weekend we were wandering through Woolworths and came across their exciting Woolies Lovebird competition, advertised throughout their national network of stores on big posters (thanks for the pic @TalyaGoldberg).

It really is an exciting competition, and we wanted in, so we went online to check it out: www.woolieslovebird.co.za…just as the poster says. But the URL was not registered. What they meant to write was www.woolieslovebirds.co.za. We can only assume that the hangovers from the Woolies New Year’s parties were the cause for this little oversight. So we did something sneaky: we registered it and now we’re holding it ransom.

To get it back, and have us point the address to their competition asap, we’re asking Woolies to match, rand for rand, all donations made towards our 2010 charity, Soil for Life, between now and Valentines Day (and to be nice, we’ll put a limit of R5000 on it). Sound good? Excellent. So we invite all our fans to go ahead and donate R25 or more to support a great cause and make Woolies pay or the lovebirds get it.

Amazingly, the stunt went down really well, Woolworths joined in the fun, the stunt got them more publicly and positive spinoff than the original campaign would have, Yuppiechef got over R50,000 donated to the Charity in just 2 weeks, were interviewed on CNBC Africa and featured in many other media, and later won a Lurie Advertising Award for their Chutzpah.

Brilliant Business Blogs

I believe it is important to gain inspiration and wisdom by continuing personal education through reading books, blogs, websites, and keeping oneself updated in whatever your chosen field by continuing to attend seminars, conferences and possibly continued further studies.

One of the people I am inspired by is Peter J Daniels, a billionaire Australian who made most of his money before 1990 in property. At that time he owned more property and employed more people in Australia than any other individual. He is now a philanthropist. I heard he never borrows money, he LENDS money to banks! He has written a number of books, the one I enjoy the most is "How to be Happy though Rich".

Here are a few Brilliant Blogs written by women entrepreneurs that are inspirational and have great tips for small business:
The Suitcase Entrepreneur Natalie leads an inspiring business, generously gives practical tips and travels the world, while continuing to be a motivated ambassador for women around the world

This blog is written by a team of women who do an amazing job of supporting and inspiring women entrepreneurs. It features interviews with fabulous women entrepreneurs, business resources, and a free directory for women-owned businesses.
Women on Business Reading Women On Business is a like having your own personal mentor. It is written by powerhouse entrepreneur and author, Susan Gunelius, along with other guest contributors.
The Boss of You Co-written by successful entrepreneur duo, Lauren Bacon and Emira Mears, The Boss of You is all about learning to run a business doing what you love.
Successful Blog Liz Strauss delves into one of the most important parts of building a business –building a base of loyal customers. This woman has heart and reaches out to people in amazing ways.
Market Like A Chick Coree Silvera, tells it like it is and examines marketing from a female perspective. Great tips on social media marketing although the last post was in 2010 and the info may be a little out of date (things change so rapidly in the social media spectrum!) She focuses on internet marketing but also writes about business and interviews top women in the marketing industry.
The Barefoot Executive's Blog Carrie Wilkerson has built several successful businesses and now coaches others to do the same. Her blog is a must read for work-from-home women.

I am inspired by these writers and I hope some of them help you too! Although it isn't easy to find time in a busy schedule to read, if you can, they could be a source of great advice, humour, learning, help you grow your business and may provide you with a wonderful network of entrepreneurs.

YuppieChef Tips for E-commerce Startups

Since YuppieChef is one of the online businesses whose success and customer service I aspire to emulate, I was amazed and thrilled that on the same night of the Grande Finale of the 6 week R1000 Money Show Challenge, Bruce Whitfield interviewed Andrew Smith, co-founder and Managing Director of YuppieChef:

Bruce Whitfield:Our Big Issue is all about Entrepreneurship and how hard it is to start a business, how tough it is to start a business...So what we’ve asked is this evening that 2 of our Shapeshifters who we’ve spoken to this year on the Money Show, Simon Mantel the owner of Mantelli’s Biscuits and Andrew Smith co-founder and MD of YuppieChef.co.za come on and just join us and tell us some of their trials and tribulations. We’ve had a most remarkable evening here at Prime Media Place, I’ve not been this moved in a long time by the genuine efforts of 5 incredible people who took up our challenge and have delivered way beyond my expectations. I honestly believe that if we gave the Starfish Foundation R5000 at the end of this evening we would have done an incredible job. What we’ve succeeded in doing was giving them R65000 largely due to the miracle efforts of Pavlo Phitidis, but I don’t want to downplay the hard work done by Warren Ingram, done by Tsego Modisane who has had a nightmare 6 weeks, he has tried things, he has had the guts and the spirit and the determination of a Jack Russell terrier, to Paul Theron who has been beaten by the wind and the rain, and then of course to Valerie Pole who has been an exceptional contestant as well. Congratulations to all of them.

Andrew Smith is the MD of YuppieChef He joins us on the line from Cape Town. We’ve heard amazing stories this evening of start up businesses, Andrew, of how difficult it is and of how people have used their networks. When you started YuppieChef and you look back at the history of YuppieChef so far, what are the 3 things that you would have done differently in setting up a website which sells the most extraordinary array of culinary artefacts, and useful things too, online? What are the 3 things you would have changed?

Andrew: Evening, Bruce. You know, I always disappoint people with my answer to this question because I’m very happy with where we are now and if I’d changed much of our path to this point, we’d be in a different place. So I don’t actually have 3 things we could have done differently, but I did think of 3 things that I’m very glad we did do.

Bruce: Then tell me those..

Andrew: Well, first of all I’m very grateful that we started a business that we were passionate about. Getting a business off the ground and where you’re going to spend 10-12 hours a day slogging hard, it really helps to do something that you actually care about doing. I tried to imagine myself in a business that I didn’t enjoy what we sold, didn’t enjoy dealing with the customers, or dealing with the team, and I think that would be an aweful place to be. So that’s my first thing – is it something you’re passionate about?

The second thing I’m very grateful that we did is prioritise the relationship with customers over short term profits. And I think that really serving and being generous to your customers is what makes it a more enjoyable process but it has also reaped the rewards, we see it now. And even in the beginning it can seem like a long investment, if I deal with this customer well, is it going to pay off in the long term. And it has over the years, and I’m very glad that we’ve done that.

And then finally, I’m very glad that we stayed focused. We sell kitchen tools, we sell them online and we sell them in South Africa. And there’ve been along the way all sorts of opportunities to open physical stores or to branch out into other things and just being able to stay focused on that and everyone we meet and everyone we speak to, it’s a very simple thing that we tell them, and that’s helped us, and it’s also helped our positioning in the marketplace.

I think if you look at all 3 of those things, so many choices are about making more money, or sticking to what you’ve decided to do, and really, these things that I think of as our key lessons are about deciding to stick to what your core is and customers will notice and the results come out. And that’s really what your Brand is. It’s not a marketing campaign or a clever slogan. Your Brand is what you decided to stick to at your core.

Bruce: But it’s inasmuch as what you don’t do as what you do do, because, if you do a bunch of stuff you shouldn’t, it’s going to distract you from what you should.

Andrew: That’s right. I think businesses are so much simpler, particularly new businesses are so much simpler than other people make out them to be. If you do what you say you’re going to do in the time you said you’re going to do it, you’ll be successful. And how many of us wanted to have someone come over and quote on some plumbing and they never even arrive, or if they do they never get back to us on the quote? Work out what problem you’re trying to solve, and do it, and the rest just follows.

Bruce: And have you had issues with regulation, have you had issues with that regulatory environment. Internet access has been a big hindrance to the explosion of YuppieChef online.

Andrew: It’s been ok. Everyone would like to have faster internet. Browsing websites is accessible to just about every customer we could have, but what I do wish the Government had done is to fix the Post Office. That would have been great in an E-commerce environment. But I don’t think there is much hope of that. What I really would have been grateful for is a simpler labour law environment. I’m not the first person to say that. You hear everyone saying that from the biggest companies down to the small. On behalf of the smaller entrepreneur, the fear about, if I employ someone, and it doesn’t work out, what if the position is wrong or what if they’re wrong, what happens? And I think there’s a lot of fear and uncertainty and no real places to go get the answers to that. And I think unfortunately it causes a lot of people holding back on employing because they’re worried about what the repercussions might be down the line. And we’ve heard these horror stories about CCMA and all these other things and most people don’t understand what they are but that is something that I wish was different in this country.

Next Steps...


Note: This Blog Post relates to some of the things one would need to do for a business in South Africa.
Whilst some of the things would be similar, each country has its own requirements, which you could find out via a Google search or speak to an attorney, accountant or business advisor in your own country.

For the first 6 weeks of this Beautiful Bracelets business I focused on growing the business and generating sales. I didn’t want to add unnecessary expenses to the business and in any case one would first want to prove the business to be a viable one before doing that. A number of years ago I had a recruiting company, one of the clients who used my services for recruiting his start up staff spent R50,000 with me in the first couple of weeks into the business (the equivalent of R250,000 in today's money), utilizing the Access Bond on his house to finance his business. His business folded within 6 months, and sadly these employees lost their jobs. It would be prudent in a micro-business start up to watch your spend very carefully in the first 6-12 months. Take advice and wisdom from others around you (for me this is my business coach, Stan Close of Ikusasa).

Now we have to work on the practical aspects. Beautiful Bracelets and its profits are now MINE to do with as I wish (until 12 November all profits went to Radio 702/Cape Talk Money Show for the Starfish Foundation and I’m thrilled about that), I have to make sure to do all the right things and some of these things cost money and require re-investing some of the profits back into the business. Like purchasing domains that would point to Beautiful Bracelets or the 1000 Beautiful Bracelets Blog... So by going into “Google Analytics Dashboard” I can work out which “search terms” people from around the world are using to find Beautiful Bracelets and start by registering those domains and pointing them to my websites. I also want to make sure I get them before anyone else does, possibly to pre-empt any copycat ideas! For starters, you will find the Blog if you try www.1000beautifulbracelets.com or www.1000beautifulbracelets.co.za with highly visible links to the main Beautiful Bracelets website where you can buy Beautiful Bracelets online.

The next step is to register the company name with Cipro and get all the paperwork done. In my first business, a recruiting company, I registered my own Close Corporation and had the Founding papers within 24 hours by driving to the Registrar of Companies and Close Corporations in Pretoria. At the time I could do this easily without assistance of an attorney or accountant: my first 4 years of employment were in law firms where this was one of my tasks! You can still do it yourself online or in person but if you don’t have time, pay a lawyer or your accountant to do it for you.

The next thing I want to do is get all the correct paperwork and import/export licences from the Department of Trade and Industry. Even the day after the Money Show Challenge ended I received an order from Canada and the level of business from overseas countries is increasing to a point where I need more systems in place to insure everything is above board. With higher volumes of Beautiful Bracelets being ordered online it won’t be feasible to send the Beautiful Bracelets as “gifts” to other destinations any longer!  A great service is provided by my international courier, with whom I signed a contract giving Beautiful Bracelets preferential local and international courier rates yesterday. This company is focusing on providing excellent rates to e-commerce start-up businesses at the moment. They will help me achieve the required export/import licences via their contacts within the DTI, but I have been warned it can take up to 6 months therefore it is probably important to get these applications in the pipeline soon .

And last, but not least, once your business in South Africa begins to show a turnover that will be likely to exceed R150,000 in its first tax year, it begins to be a more viable option to ensure your business is registered in a format that would attract a lower rate of tax. Your Accountant can advise you on this. Since I have big dreams and a huge vision for Beautiful Bracelets I am already looking at all these aspects. SARS (South African Revenue Service) gives good advice and insights on Turnover Tax here.

There are other aspects one needs to be aware of and deal with as the business grows, I will cover these via this Blog as I get to them. Things like Labour Laws, Basic Conditions of Employment, the practical aspects of business administration and other things one needs to be aware of in the first 6 to 12 months of running a business. I believe in treating people well, and looking after my staff because I believe that if you have staff that are also your raving fans, life will be easier. I want Beautiful Bracelets to be a happy place for people to go to work as it grows! Mike, one of the joint owners of Cappuccino's Midrand (my favourite hangout whilst working on this Blog and the 1000 Beautiful Bracelets Book) is a great example of how one should treat one's staff. Happy staff equals happy customers and more sales!

The Day After... (and selling on Twitter)

I salute Pavlo Phitidis and his phenomenal coup of a profit of  just over R65,000 in 6 weeks from a start-up of  R1000 and I look forward to the in-depth analysis of how he did it (Thursday 14 Nov Money Show, Radio 702 / Cape Talk). The biggest winner of all is the Children of the Starfish Foundation and I'm thrilled to have been a small part of helping them.

The Grand Finale last night was spectacular fun, and the profits of each contestant were only revealed at the last moment it seemed. So I kept selling Beautiful Bracelets from the moment I walked into the Entertainment Studio and then whilst the Money Show was in progress, continued to sell Beautiful Bracelets via Twitter to anybody in the room who would buy.. here is how it unfolded on Twitter:

Radio 702 MoneyShow Challenge Update: Week 6

A very exciting day: The Grande Finale!

Whether I win or lose, this has been a wonderful experience. The most rewarding part of it has been in bringing joy to others: Those who have helped me, those whom I have helped (by creating employment), and those who became clients or customers by purchasing Beautiful Bracelets!

Achievements:
Beautiful Bracelets have sold to people from different towns and cities in South Africa, and have traveled to India, Sweden, England and America! So Beautiful Bracelets has in the short space of 6 weeks become a truly international company, by virtue of being found on the wrists of ladies living overseas..

We found 2 retailers in Johannesburg willing to stock the Bracelets, and this past week, The Ballet Box in Cape Town paid for stock which should be delivered shortly.

Production of Beautiful Bracelets was better than all previous weeks in anticipation of a Weekend Market where 600 women were attending a Conference. Sales were good, although I had hoped to sell more!

I think one of the things I can rejoice over is that "Beautiful Bracelets" has been extremely well branded over this period directly as a result of being a part of this Radio 702 / Cape Talk MoneyShow Challenge, although I was thrilled to have been inspired in the middle of the first night of the Challenge 6 weeks ago with such a catchy name.. And what a win to find the domain name available, as if it had been a "hidden treasure" for years, waiting for this moment! Having mentioned the great publicity, I should point out that although the Branding of the Name has been excellent, so far it seems only 25% of sales have come as a direct result of this competition and its branding (which is quite a lot), most of the sales have been as a result of my existing networks with family, friends and colleagues, as well as my energetic sales initiatives.

Something I am really thrilled about is the Book: "1000 Beautiful Bracelets" (How I made a profit on R1000 in just 6 weeks and how you can too). A real winner! The book will be published by Modjaji Books and should be on the shelves by April 2013, pre-order on the Beautiful Bracelets website here. People are already putting their names down on the list..

Disappointments:
I would have liked to have sold more Beautiful Bracelets. I had a personal goal to sell 1000 Beautiful Bracelets, probably ambitious... but the year isn't over yet: we will certainly celebrate once this target is reached.

A Good Result:
The most important part for me in this Radio 702 MoneyShow Challenge is that I have not just created this business as a 6 Week Wonder: Beautiful Bracelets is on a good path towards ever-increasing successes, a business that will continue to help people by continuing  to create employment and bring hope to people or are unemployed and perhaps even hurting and broken people, especially women. We already have Christmas Markets lined up from now until the end of the year, and look forward to excellent sales in the remainder of 2012.

The Big Reveal Tonight...!

Finally we have the Radio 702 / Cape Talk "Big Reveal" tonight during the Money Show aired on both radio stations between 6 and 8 p.m. This is where they will reveal who the winner of the Challenge is, out of  5 Contestants including Paul Theron, Tshego Modisane, Pavlo Phitidis and Warren Ingram and myself.  It seems Bruce Whitfield will be devoting most of the Program this evening to the R1000 Business Startup Challenge and even if I weren't IN the Challenge I am sure I'd be listening. It should be fun! There will be inputs from other parties who will give insights into aspects of a micro business start up.

When You Have Done All...

Well, I have worked really hard. I have done my best, put all my energy into this Radio 702/Cape Talk Radio R1000 Business Startup Challenge, and done everything I know how, to make it as successful as possible from my side in this short time. I have worked with the awareness that perhaps there is someone out there, doing the same thing as if their very life depended on it: a make-or-break situation: where this might be their last chance to actually " make it". Well, I hope that when the numbers come out it shows that in this one business it really is possible to make a profit within only 6 weeks, and to create a sustainable business that a person could begin to make a living from. I am sure my competitors will prove the same in their respective businesses, and it sounds as though a few of them have done exceptionally well in it, even before we get the facts in the "Big Reveal" tomorrow.

Beloved, when you have done all you know to do…done all you can do to stand, you must remain standing. You must hold on. What do you stand in or hold on to? You stand in Me. You stand on the Rock and not the shifting sands of your own efforts or successes. You stand with faith and confidence when all the odds are against you, for I have indeed entered the fray. You hold on to the Truth…the Word which does not return void. I want you there standing in Me when the answer comes…when the promise becomes manifest and evident.

Praying...

Apparently 90% of the World's population pray!

If you are one of those, please join me in praying for the success of Beautiful Bracelets. Especially today. It feels as though a lot hinges on just one day. Although the whole of the past 6 weeks has been preparation for this "one day".

It has been an interesting, fulfilling, stretching and fulfilling 6 weeks. I have worked so hard I feel as though I need a holiday, although there are clients waiting for me to take up other Challenges in my other business on Tuesday!. I won't be letting Beautiful Bracelets go, it will continue operating. For the past 6 weeks I have pushed it in a strong growth phase. For the rest of the year I will allow it to stabilise and be established. In 2013 I have big plans for Beautiful Bracelets. I have a vision and a dream for it, beyond this small little beginning!

Big Day Tomorrow!

I have known from the start of this Challenge that 10 November would be the biggest day for me... A Christmas Market at my church where 600 women have confirmed attendance for a Conference running parallel to the Market, a wonderful opportunity for Beautiful Bracelets to be showcased and many have warned me to anticipate a sell-out! I really hope so.

In addition to this, elsewhere there are Beautiful Bracelets selling, in stores, at Flea Markets, online and even at a Charity Art Auction in support of the Starfish Foundation...

I must say, this Radio 702 Money Show R1000 Challenge (make a profit from R1000 in just 6 weeks) has blossomed into something bigger than even I could anticipate. The publicity has been phenomenal, although I am being quite careful to keep tabs as far as possible as to which sales I could attribute to the fact of the publicity generated by the actual Challenge, and which sales are as a result of my own personal networks and social media and ENERGY. It takes a LOT of energy to make a success out of any business and I have worked very hard on this business NOT just with the idea that it is a "6 week wonder" but rather, I have viewed the 6 weeks as an opportunity to start something that would have legs, that would go the distance and actually continue to be a sustainable business that would help people going forward. It may be in the spotlight at the moment, but I still have a big vision for what it possible, whilst still working on the nitty gritty of the day-to-day aspects that are needed to nurture a micro business startup.

There are probably things I could have done better. And I'm sure I will receive useful guidelines. There are people now depending on the ongoing success of this business and my desire is that it will continue to be a source of inspiration, hope, and an income for many...

5 Key Issues for Effective Logistics

Today I noticed our first compliment on HelloPeter.com (click to view).

Which brings me to one of the most important things if you're contemplating an online business, and that is to ensure you have an effective Logistics Strategy to ensure customer satisfaction. The world is a very small place and if your logistics, delivery and service are excellent this goes a long way to ensuring a favourable perception of your product and branding in the market place. Since I have been wanting to have an online business (maybe several in time), I have been quietly testing the market to see which companies that I order from deliver the kind of excellent service I expect and demand when ordering online. Two of my favourites are Kalahari.com and YuppieChef. Having done that, I researched which company THEY used to handle all their couriers. And one name stood out far above the rest. So I am in negotiations to sign the contract imminently, with preferential rates. It just so happens that over the past month, this local and international courier organisation is running a strategy to favour new startups in e-commerce/online businesses!

There are 5 Key Issues you need to consider for Effective Logistics:

  1. Movement of Product. You need to have an effective system in place to ensure rapid delivery of the product to the client whether it be in the case of Beautiful Bracelets, to the individual who orders one Beautiful Bracelet for a 21st Birthday gift to be delivered the next day in another city or to a Gift Shop.
  2. Movement of Information. It is important to use "online tracking" so that you know where the product is at all times. And to maintain customer contact if there are any problems.
  3. Time/service. Orders must be filled completely, quickly and accurately.
  4. Cost. This is a key issue when measuring logistics effectiveness. The highest price does not necessarily mean the best service, nor does the lowest cost necessarily meet your needs. In this business, Beautiful Bracelets, I approached the Company that I felt was delivering the best service and fortunately they are driving to secure e-commerce service which means they have also given a quote for a preferential rate and a phenomenally low price for this service! And that is for both local and international courier charges.
  5. Integration: between yourself and your suppliers, your customers and retailers, as well as good internal liaison and integration. Partnership and competitiveness are enhanced by good integration, and meeting your suppliers and clients face-to-face is important to enhance good partnerships and alliances.
Each of the above points is essential to ensure the success of your logistics, its value-add to your business and your competitiveness in the market place.

Radio 702 MoneyShow Challenge Update: Week 5

Although I try to get this Weekly Update on Beautiful Bracelets done first thing each Monday, this one is a bit late on purpose, I didn't want to pre-empt the In-studio Radio 702/Cape Talk interview with Bruce Whitfield on the Money Show. There were a few landmark things that happened in Week 5:

  1. First international order confirmed via the Beautiful Bracelets website (for 14 Beautiful Bracelets, from London!).
  2. Firehouse Gifts, Dunkeld West Shopping Centre, Jan Smuts Ave, Johannesburg requested and took delivery of Beautiful Bracelets and 2 of these bracelets sold to a customer who walked in whilst I was standing there!
  3. A Cape Town Publisher, Modjaji Books, agreed to publish the book in April 2013, which will probably be titled "1000 Beautiful Bracelets" (subtitle: "How I made a profit from R1000 in just 6 weeks and how you can too")
  4. Employees: Beautiful Bracelets is now the proud employer of  TWO people, creating employment being one of the major aims of this new business. But of course, one has to watch the profits carefully and ensure that expansion of the staff is in line with growth in the business. This is something we will continue to monitor carefully.

Like many people reading this Blog, we are sitting on the edge of our seats and working very hard until the last second, doing our best to beat the other 4 Contestants in the Radio 702/Cape Talk Money Show R1000 Business Challenge.. Since Beautiful Bracelets is a retail item, it all comes down to sales at the end of the day, and we are not sure how all the contestants are doing, so from our side we are doing our best and working as hard as is humanly possible to ensure success. We can do our best. The final decision rests in the hands of the Judge.

The Seed For A Thing is In Itself..


You don't have to look far to find the seed for an idea on something to do that will bring an income and turn a profit. Here is another story I came across, there are so many wonderful examples to gain insight and inspiration from!

Today at the Carwash I started chatting to the Kris Pillay, the Manager about Beautiful Bracelets and he told me an interesting story of how 6 months ago he was retrenched, and he took R200 startup capital made samoosa’s (a delicious curry-filled pastry pocket with 3 corners for anyone who doesn’t know) and sold them on the side of the street across the road from Waterfall Office Park which must have 1000’s of offices and people working there. He added cakes and sweets to his range of stock. The business did well and over the 6 month period he expanded the offerings and started making chicken curries and Breyani (one of my favourite Indian dishes). People loved it, and the Manager of an Office Canteen inside the Waterfall Office Park liked his food so much that when the existing supplier’s contract expired, she offered it to Kris. Kris employed someone to continue with this business under his management (which he is easily able to do being within a very close proximity of the new job he secured in a field he enjoys). Kris said that during the 6 months his food business did so well it assisted him to pay the rent and put food on the table for his wife and family!

I love stories like this...

Resting...


Today I am thinking of all the cyclists training for the the 94.7 Cycle Challenge (18 November), in the Greater Johannesburg area, one of the largest Cycling Races in the world with over 30,000 entrants in 2012. I almost wish I was a cyclist, what an amazing way this must be to relax and unwind. I am a bit envious of one of my competitors in the Radio 702 Money Show R1000 Challenge who has said he will be participating, and I hope he does really well.

I realised yesterday after losing a SIM card for my main cell/mobile phone, and a few hours later I lost the car keys AND the driver's licence(!) that despite the fact I feel under huge pressure to work, I really have to stick to my own rules and take the day off.

Have a Good Work Ethic

Although the word “ethics” when it comes to business might mean the ideals of having integrity, honesty, morally correct or being a person who doesn’t get involved with bribery, corruption, etc in business.. but this is not what I mean by the heading. What I mean is, if you want to have a great business you have to “show up”, be there on time every day, and work consistently for the full day, exercising good self discipline and energy in one’s input. This does not mean, become a workaholic. It is important to maintain a balance of a healthy mix of work, physical health and relaxation and fulfilling relationships.

There are a few things that assist with having a good work ethic.

Self discipline: This is important: keeping focused on the goal and ensuring you complete the daily tasks assigned to reach that goal.

A Sense of Responsibility: Putting in your best effort to complete the tasks at hand.

Integrity: Work on fostering trust and honesty in relationships with customers, employees.

Emphasis on Quality, working with a sense of excellence in everything you do.

Teamwork: A good work ethic would include being prepared to engage in teamwork as the business grows

Sharing: A willingness to share your expertise with others

Thoroughness: Complete the tasks at hand with attention to detail

Tenacity: Stay with it, even when you feel like giving up!

A great sense of humour! Life is too short not to have fun!
